Great book. Anyone interested in Kentucky basketball will find a lot of history here.

This book puts in perspective the "official" religion of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As a UK student last year during the 1998 National Championship run I never would have guessed the ammount of media attention the CATS draw...can you picture your local TV stations having live feeds when the team plane lands at the local airport...that is just a small glance to the fever that overtakes KY during March. This book puts you into the heart of KY. I met the author at Joseph-Beth Booksellers last year in Lexington as he signed the book...there was not a large crowd there during the signing...the CATS were on TV.

Disability, Difference, Discrimination: Perspectives on Justice in Bioethics and Public Policy (Point/Counterpoint: Philosophers Debate Contemporary Issues)

Review

This is an excellent collection of essays on a topic relatively negleted by social ethicists. (Ethics: An International Journal of Social, Political, and Legal Philosophy)Breaks open the door that has kept out concerns of disability from the discipline of philosophy. The major importance of this volume lies in the questions its essays raise―in the forceful, insightful, and provocative issues they present, and in their clear demonstration that these questions belong at the center of philosophical inquiry. (Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy)What the authors of Disability, Difference, Discrimination have given me is not only the theoretical tools to explain to myself what is wrong about this state of affairs, but also many practical suggestions for helping me be less of an 'ableist.' I am confident that it has similar gifts to offer any reader, with or without disabilities. This is a book worth re-reading in a society that routinely produces books not worth reading at all. (Rosemarie Tong, Distinguished Professor in Health Care Ethics and director of the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics, University of Nort Social Theory and Practice)

This is a good book, provided that you have a solid foundation in judo. I think you would have a lot of difficulty learning many of the techniques contained in the book unless you have some experience as a judo player. The photos and descriptions do a great job of explaining how to execute the techniques. If you have some experience as a judo player and are looking for some MMA techniques or just some "no-gi" techniques, this is a great place to start.

This book is great for its purpose, which is to show guys how to pull of judo throws in mma and in no-gi situations. Karo Parisyan shows what he does best, for intermediate judo players who have a basic understanding of the throws and want to adapt them to no-gi, this is must have. While "Judo for MMA" has its strengths, it also has its weaknesses and in some ways feels like a rushed product.1) Beginners to Judo might not fully understand what is going on with the techniques.2) No instruction on proper falling for the person being thrown. I don't know anybody who would let you practice throws on them without you letting them also practice throws on you.3) No information on about how to use the cage, which is absolutely crucial for setting up Judo throws in MMA fights.4) Many filler techniques that just take up pages and that Karo Parisyan probably has never used in his fights(i.e. rolling kneebar, calf crush, not saying they are not good techniques). Every other book I have by Victory Belt is made almost entirely of techniques actually used by the fighters in their fights and examples given of the time they've used it in competition.I personally don't consider this the best book for beginners to Judo because I believe that it is best for someone interested in learning judo to first learn it in the context of the sport of Judo, by taking a Judo class, as oppose to trying to learn it for mma or no-gi without a clear understanding of the principles. The reason why I say this, is because Judo throws have so much subtle technique and so many intricate parts, that they need to be taught, learned, and practiced at a slow pace. This explains why Judokas traditionally train with and compete in the gi, because the added friction forces them to perfect technical and complex throws that they would have otherwise discarded if they were exclusively wrestling shirtless with all the sweat and slipperiness. Once the judo practitioner perfects these throws in the gi, his body remembers the movement when he takes the gi off.A better introduction to judo for complete beginners is "Guerilla Jiu Jitsu" by Dave Camarillo or "Judo Unleashed" by Neil Ohlenkamp, both of which happen to be books that teach you how to throw with the gi. In addition, Dave Camarillo's book teaches you how to fall, which absolutely important. "Judo Unleashed" is great overall introduction to actual sport of Judo. Of course, the best way to learn Judo is to join a local Judo club that hopefully has good instructor who has a creditable lineage, knows how to prepare guys for competition, knows how to slow down the training for beginners, and who respects you and your decision to cross-train in other arts(i.e. MMA or BJJ).While in the end, "Judo for mma" has a lot of great techniques that useful for MMA and no-gi fights, especially the throw setups that counter wrestling takedowns and throw setups off of the standing kimura. I personally use some of these techniques myself when I see the opening for them when I grapple without the gi. I recommend this book, just not for the completely novice.

Great book

Great guide for those schooled in Judo who want to add no gi to their game. As usual you can't learn Judo from a book (or any other art really), but if you have a grappling or Judo base, the techniques in this book are awesome. There are tons of pics which help immensely, and Karo shows the proper grips and such which bridge the gap between gi and no gi Judo. Easy to pick up the techniques and teach to others if you already have the gi Judo up your sleave.

Karo is almost a tragic story. He was at the top but then fell swiftly from grace. Were it not for his extensive sharing of his beautiful technique, we would never have been able to extract the true significance of his genius. This book is an encyclopedia of bone crushing Judo/Hayastan techniques. It is worth its weight in bronze.

I'm biased in my opinion but this book its a good window into Karo's life. Talks about his various championships he has attained, his personal struggles, and of course the moves. If you are into wrestling, it is a good way to blend your moves. A lot of the other reviews are right....would like more stuff though.I am satisfied with my purchase. It also seem like the prices are going up, so buy one before they hit $100 or $150 :/

I thought it was a good book for anybody who knows a little judo and wants to add to their game. Especially for the MMA guys. It was also a good read about Karo's back ground from Armenia to this country and from going to the Olympics to MMA.

Very good information about specific grips to use in the clinch to replace the grips you lose when your opponent isn't wearing a gi. It does lack information about kazushi, or the un-balancing that is needed to set up Judo throws. You'll need a little bit of Judo knowledge to get the most out of the throwing techniques in this book. "The Sport of Judo", by Kobayashi is a good one for that: very short and to the point and explains the un-balancing that is missing from Kayo's book.Otherwise it's great; some good grappling techniques that would fit nicely into just about any mixed martial artist's tool box, some stuff on g n' p. One thing I like is that when Karo gives a technique he also tells you which fights he's used it in so you can see the technique in action.Score another win for Victory Belt.

This book got me into computers and networking. I now work at a Big 4 technology company designing network architectures despite having majored in Psychology. I owe an incredible amount to this book and to this author. I literally thought one day, "I have no idea how the internet works". I looked for books, and I had two choices, either this book, or a $160 textbook like this Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach (7th Edition) that devotes hundreds of pages to different graph-based computer algorithms. This book appeals to two kinds of audiences: ** 1. If you don't know anything about the internet. This book is the best, most easy introduction to get. That's good, because it's also one of the only introductions that's not a textbook. You won't learn everything, because that's a lot of computer science algorithms, but you'll have the best overview from this book. The stories are good, but not excessive like in Malcolm Gladwell's books. ** 2. If you are under 35 and work in technology, no matter how technical your role. This is because so much of the technology you use now is virtual...software defined networking, virtual machines, virtual routers, VLANs, VPCs, AWS, etc. The internet is still a very very physical place, made up of hundreds of thousands of miles or wire, giant internet exchange centers (like the kind Facebook runs out of Nebraska that you'll never see), $80,000 routers made by Brocade that people like Verizon buy, etc. If you want to know how the internet works in the same way that you can open your car and know how everything works (as opposed to just buying a Tesla), get this book.P.S. If you are now pretty technical and want to move beyond the algorithms and other important-but-not-real-world kinds of learning, I suggest you check out Network Warrior: Everything You Need to Know That Wasn't on the CCNA Exam.

I do not agree with some reviewers claiming that the author lacks proper technical insight to write a worthy book about internetworking. It seems to me that it was a deliberate decision not to lean too much on tech details when describing how Internet works. Certainly I could not expect this title to describe inner workings of the TCP/IP suite, or how routers from different networks negotiate routes via BGP. The author, starting with a realization that most people don't notice the existence of networks (Internet is seen only by the content pulled from servers), tried to describe their physicality. Internet is not a nondescript "cloud", it happens to consist of cables. Lots and lots of cables.I like Andrew Blum's remarks on how Internet "tubes" strongly depend on world's geography and existing infrastructure. Cables are placed along roads, the largest Internet exchanges are placed in cities which already were commerce hubs, undersea cables originate and end near ports. Data centers are built in cold places with abundance of cheap electricity. The Internet, commonly perceived as ubiquitous, at its very core (the backbone network) is running over a not-that-large set of routes, governed by a handful of companies. Also appealing to me were the attempts to capture the atmosphere (the nature) of visited buildings and people; probably a bit stereotypical (all network engineers wear hoodies), but enjoyable. The author's penchant for expressing philosophical remarks (mainly on how virtual relates to physical) was annoying a few times but, OTOH, they make it a book which tries not only to convey Internet's architecture, but also its idea. A pleasant read, IMHO even for die-hard network specialists.

I'm an engineer and have always been interested in networking technology. When I heard an interview with author Andrew Blum regarding this book, on NPR, I immediately decided to buy and read it. The book is interesting and insightful in parts, but I found it a bit superficial and was somewhat disappointed with the superficiality of most of it. I guess I was expecting something more like Malcolm Gladwell's quantitative analyses of many of the topics that he writes about, but instead this book is mostly a travelogue of the author going around and just looking at various internet exchange points and data centers. There were two chapters that were really great: one concerned Andrew Blum's meeting with Leonard Kleinrock, who in some ways "founded" the Internet when he established the first inter-network link in the original Arpanet. Hearing one of the Internet's founders explain all the things he did and didn't envision for it was fascinating. The most interesting chapter is the second-to-last, in which the author observes the laying of an undersea fiber-optic cable in Portugal, which will connect it to the Azores and Africa. The nitty-gritty details of forming the physical interconnections between distant points are described here in an up-close way that I found far more satisfying than the detached, tourist-like point of view that the author takes in most of the book.
