Packed tight with its wide variety examples in C# and F#, primarily functional-style covering common challenges to making your applications scale.
This is the most comprehensive read on the subject matter I've encountered so far. The author goes above and beyond at explaining the material. The examples are easy to comprehend, the goal of each individual pattern is defined clearly, and the author even gives historic context for some of the C# features (such as asynchronous support in .NET), which helps understand why a given .NET feature is implemented the way it is.It's often hard to explain such complex topics on so many different levels (programming language support, underlying .NET framework behavior, relation to functional programming principles, etc.) and yet the book does a stellar job at it.As a bonus - if you are interested in functional programming in general, this book will help you explore popular functional programming concepts, such as Apply, Map, Bind, in both C# and F#.Highly recommend this book. A must-have for all .NET programmers.
This book raises the bar significantly for F# literature.Finally, a book written by someone knowledgeable on Haskell, with comparisons to Haskell technology.I hope this is a bellwether of more such F# literature.
One of the most difficult subjects to tackle in the IT industry, the author clearly has a grasp on the topic with a well written book. Great examples and coverage!
I have attended many conferences both general to .NET and specific to F#, and have found no one else who can explain these concepts better than Riccardo.This book starts out by introducing basic concepts with (mostly coffee-related) analogies, and builds up to explain real strategies to achieve concurrency, parallelism, and all-around performant .NET code. Lower-level APIs are discussed at first, and as abstractions are brought into the picture, the author makes sure to not only mention edge cases, but dive into them as they happen in real-life scenarios.
First time I heard Riccardo giving a talk on Actors model (see chapter 11) in 2015 and was blown away how clear and simple he explained it. So when he announced that he's going to write a book I just prepared to wait and bought it afterwards.There are not many F# books on the market, especially the ones showing practical examples and clear benefits of the language. This book makes very good point giving code samples on both C# and F# with very gentle (but I must admit in not very "canonical" way) introduction to functional programming with F# to C# developers.A must-read for any modern .NET developer who wants to add more tools to their tool-belt.
