I have to say that I really had a tough time wrapping my head around both the writing and art style of the Darth Vader graphic novels. Kieron Gillen isn't very clear in his approach and I find myself having to re-read several portions to understand what's going on. Same goes for Salvador Larocca's artwork. It's just so mysterious at times and I find myself needing re-cover material that should have a simple flow to it. All that being said, Gillen is a visionary and has come up with some brilliant concepts that are enjoyable to experience. Telling the story from the perspective of the Empire, and slowly seeing Darth Vader's character develop from what we see between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back is quite enjoyable. All-in-all a solid-enough story to get 4-star review from me.

This starts what I think is the best of the new Marvel Star Wars series. There are five trades that you'll want to obtain to read the full story. Here are the collections--DARTH VADER (that's this book that you are reading about)SHADOWS AND SECRETSVADER DOWN (this is a cross over story with the main Star Wars series)THE SHU-TORUN WAREND OF GAMES (this ends the first Darth Vader series--hope that there is a second!)What's the tale about? Basically, Palpatine is not too happy with Vader after the Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor feels as if a Dark Lord of the Sith should have been able to prevent its destruction (and he damn near did, if you saw Rogue One). These stories take place just after that first Rebel Victory (the stealing of the plans and the mechanical moon's destruction), and it follows Vader as he tries to regain face in the eyes of his Master. Now, it should be said that this series runs concurrently with the main Marvel Star Wars series, too. And, the books do intertwine, especially at the beginning. In fact, in some cases, you'll see the same event from two different perspectives: First from the Rebel perspective in the Star Wars book, then from Vader's or the Empire's point of view in the Vader books. If you are reading both series, here's the reading order that I would suggest....SKYWALKER STRIKES! (the first SW book)DARTH VADER (this book)SHOWDOWN ON THE SMUGGLER'S MOONVADER DOWN (the crossover between the two series)REBEL JAILTHE SHU-TORUN WAREND OF GAMESThe first Vader series ends in END OF GAMES, but the main Star Wars series continues with...LAST FLIGHT OF THE HARBINGER (Published in January 2017)YODA'S SECRET WAR (Published in July 2017)

I was hesitant with this and thought it could go either way, but the story has some promise and Vader as a character is mysterious but starting to get interesting (I hope), and of course the art is great.

This arch greatly enriches the subtext of the existing Skywalker story. While paralleling the events in the main Star Wars comic series, Darth Vader explores his roll in the Empire and sets about a journey to ensure his position within it. Excellent read, great illustrations, clever reintroduction to classic characters, and memorable new ones are all reasons why I'm on my 3rd reading within almost a week.

I wish that there was more action like this in the movies or that they would create a spinoff movie based on this storyline. It is awesome, the Death Star has been destroyed and the Emporer blames Vader. Now Vader has competition and the loss of his Master's confidence and has to kill a whole bunch of people and robots in order to get some of his prestige back. I love the storyline and look forward to reading additional comic books in this line.

This first series featuring Lord Vader, and introducing the amoral Doctor Aphra, as well as triple zero as Beetee, the murderous droids is brilliant. When i think of marvel comics first, mostly horrible star wars series... This erases it.

My husband is enjoying reading this. I'm just not sure why the lead time is so long. When I ordered it in early January the estimated delivery time was February-March, so I knew ahead of time....but just wondering WHY?

Good story and tie in to the original and prequel trilogys. Vader's story is vast and ever growing tale that is one shrouded in question and this sheds some light on his story...from a certain point of view! A worthwill read for any Star Wars fan.

The detail is encumbering; the flowery, overwrought language impedes; the bias envelopes: it is, however, our history told in the language and flavor of the day.

This is a fantastic book about Wyoming's range wars and the 'invasion' of the early 1890s. Written only a couple of years after the events happened, A S Mercer's account is very brave indeed. He calls it as he sees it, and puts the blame fairly and squarely on those responsible. No wonder certain individuals and organisations tried their best to stop this book being published. They even tried burning all known copies. We are lucky they didn't succeed, and this book is extremely valuable to history. When I visited the USA in 2011, my wife and I drove into Kaycee, Wyoming, and across the street the sign above the local bar reads 'INVASION BAR'. ..... the people of Wyoming don't forget these happenings, and you will get a factual and accurate account of the unlawful acts of the Texas and other gunmen who were hired by the powerful forces of 'big cattle' in the 1890s. A must for all fans of western history. A great read.

There are books which can hover at the edge of your consciousness for many years until you finally get around to reading them. You know what I mean-- a book that you keep hearing about in one way or another from other people and it doesn't rise to the top of your to-buy list until there's a kind of critical mass and you just have to pick it up? Or am I the only person who has that happen?Anyhow, the first time that I heard about the Mercer book was probably in graduate school when I was studying Shane. At that time I didn't read it, and mostly forgot about it. Some years later, I read Nature's Metropolis and I think that it came up again in the bibliography. I made a note of it, added it to one of my voluminous and frankly-impossible-to-read-them-all-before-I-die wish lists. And then I forgot about it again. Finally and most recently, the War on Powder River was discussed in an article that I happened to be reading and again The Banditti of the Plains came up in the text. Somehow that struck me in just the right way, so I finally went ahead and bought the book.First off, let me say that the history of this book may be more interesting than the book itself. The University of Oklahoma Press edition begins with a letter written to the Princeton University Library in 1923, warning that the book should be safeguarded as it was prone to being stolen and mutilated. It goes on to say that the book was supressed in 1894 by a court in Wyoming, and all copies were supposed to have been burned. One wagon full of books made it across the state line into Colorado at night, and were accordingly saved. The foreword by William Kittrell then goes on to tell the reader that the publication of this book resulted in Mercer's career effectively being ruined, businesses being closed, printers going to jail.So what's in the book? Well, in pretty much every review or description of The Banditti of the Plains someone is sooner or later going to use a sentence that reads something like: "this is not an objective description of the history of the Johnson County War". Mercer was a very angry man, who made a lot of very angry accusations against men and families with a whole lot of power. He wrote the book at age 55 as a then well-known publisher. The background of the book is the tension between large wealthy cattle ranchers and the smaller settlers who lived in their shadow. In 1892, the Wyoming Stock Growers Association (WSGA) hired a small army of hired killers to wipe out many of these small farms in response to what the WSGA saw as a pervasive problem of cattle rustling. The Banditti of the Plains is a first-hand account of what happened next.Particularly if you're interested in the subject, it is a very interesting book. The accounts of the killings of Ella Watson and Nate Champion were powerful reading. I wouldn't necessarily read the book straight through, but would use the foreword and/or a website about the Johnson County War to help fill in the names, characters, and and background. It is at least worth reading in support of censored books. And I kind of have to say that the lesson is worth bearing in mind when considering the way that modern large companies try to preemptively prevent loss of income by attacking people whose way of life they say as conducive to modern day rustling. The basic story is not really as far in the past as we might think.Recommended.

This book illustrates how special interests influenced our government, both State and Federal to participate in the murder of innocent farmers and townspeople who were falsely accused of cattle rustling in Wyoming when it was actually the special interests who were pillaging and murdering the same people they were accusing. If it happened once in our country, it could happen again and we should take note.

It is a very dry history of a period a long time ago. I got because it was written by my grandmother's Uncle.

Interesting book about big cattle ranchers in Wyoming in the late 1800's and crimes they committed against the other settlers. Spelling, punctuation and the writing in this book is not the best.

Great read. Should be required reading in all schools. Sets history straight.

Gave as a gift to my "wild west" history buff dad. He seemed to enjoy this book.
