Scholarly. Interesting. Not much color.

The opinions expressed in this book are a little superficial when it comes to the difference between Spanish Courtyard Housing and the so called Spanish Courtyard Housing in the US.I grew up in Spain and not only love authentic Spanish/Andalusian Courtyard Housing, but I also understand the "soul" that this type of housing created in the lifestyle of their inhabitants, brought to Spain by many Centuries of Muslim occupation. The understanding that structures only do not recreate the actual spirit of this housing and its inhabitants appears to be missing in this book.

This book highlights one of the unique qualities of Los Angeles. Much of L.A. housing has a Mediteranian feel, not surprising given the climate of southern california and the foothills and mountains and the courtyard is a prefect oasis to build this style of house around. This book does a wonderful job of showcasing these beautiful courtyards and the text and the images are very well presented. Reading this book reminds me of why i love Los Angeles so much, I mean even with all of her problems, she can be so serine and beautiful. Highly recommended.

This Fodor's guide to Peru seems pretty accurate and descriptive. I've visited Peru twice in the past 2 years, once to Lima-Cusco-Machu Picchu-Titicaca, and once to the upper highlands (Chachapoyas-Kuelap-Gocta-Bagua District). I've been there recently enough that I was surprised to see some new things in this book, including the airport expansion in Jaen (although the luggage belt was not working on my trip), the Kuelap gondola (truly fabulous... I was there the week it opened), and even comments regarding the terrible flooding of 2017. I recommend bringing a map (Peru 1:1,500,000 Travel Map), and you should do more research before you go (particularly if you are a budget traveler). Overall, this was a good guide. My trip next year will be to the rainforest. This book will be part of my planning.A few hints: if you've got 24 hours in some town or city, you can probably get your laundry done. You'll find diet drinks only in bigger cities. I had a blast with two different bike tours in Lima (Miraflores). Don't miss out on trying the cerviche. You may find that travel within Peru takes longer than you expect. Remember that outside of Lima, public restrooms often have an attendant who will charge you about S1.0-0.50 to enter (have the coins ready), usually (not always) giving you a few sheets of toilet paper. Soap was uncommon, so bring your own soap, hand sanitizer, and extra toilet paper. Finally, apparently counterfeit US currency is a problem there. Make sure the money that you bring is unmarked and not dog-eared... it may not be accepted, even at banks. Try to avoid damaged soles as well.

Good book and great service

I always take a Fodor's guide with me when I travel. Regardless of the destination, I have generally found them superior to other guides in every way. This "Essential Peru" is no exception.Information and organization are the most important things to me, but I have to start by complimenting the graphics. There are photos in every section and, with vibrant color whether flutist, blankets, parrots or Machu Picchu, they remind you why you want to visit Peru. It is a gorgeous and fascinating country. I especially like the section on Peruvian history--it's lively and inviting. There are good maps of the country, including some city maps of the places you may be most likely to go to.)Information and organization are always a Fodor strength and this guide is no exception. (As usual, I could live without orange type for the headings, but no one seems to think how some travelers are not young with 20/20 vision. It's annoying, like the small font, but at least there's a legitimate reason for the font size--there's a lot of good information here.)The sections are as follows; each one starts with an overview of "Top Reasons to Go" and planning tips for that area:1- Experience Peru. Always a favorite, giving an overview of the country and travel tips.2- Lima. Details on visiting the capitol. Of course, things to see, to buy, to eat, and places to stay.3- Nazca and the Southern Coast. Same as above.4- Southern Andes and Lake Titicaca5- Cuzco and the Sacred Valley6- Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail Includes a special section on Machu Picchu. Also packing list for the Inca Trail and --very important-- preparations for the hike.7- The Amazon Basin with a special flora and fauna section for the Peruvian Amazon8- The Central Highlands9- The North Coast and Northern Highlands10- Understanding Peru - 17 pages of Spanish vocabulary for travelers; General tips about getting there, money, passports, holidays, local travel and accommodation and food tips.

You're probably going to need to buy your own maps as there are very few maps included in the book.The first chapter provides some helpful suggested itineraries as well as an overview and history of Peru. The rest of the chapters (2-9) each covers a specfic region of Peru:2 Lima3 Nazca & The Southern Coast4 The Southern Andes & Lake Titicaca5 Cusco & the Sacred Valley6 Machu Picchu & The Inca Trail7 The Amazon Basin8 The Central Highlands9 The North Coast & Northern HighlandsA handy albeit far-from-comprehensive phrase section (15 pages) is included to help you with basic communication. The format is English - Spanish - pronunciation. For example:Excuse me - Perdón - pehr-dohnI'm interested in this - Me interresa esmo - meh een-teh- reh-sah ehs-tohAll in all, this is a helpful travel guide and definitely a good starting point for digging further into what to see in Peru as you plan your visit.

Solid guide for Peru highlights; not great for in-depth travel. It hits the high points of most of the major cities, and has a lot of background and research. They cover safety issues in different places, which is nice, and have restaurants with descriptions and menu items, which is an enhancement over the past. It's a good start for those planning to go to Peru. Hikers may want to consider a supplement, especially if going on the Inca Trail or hiking up to Machu Picchu.

Michael Ghiglieri earned a Ph.D. in Ecology from U.C. Davis for research on wild chimps in Uganda. He has worked as a wilderness river and trekking guide in the Sierra Nevada and many other regions and countries since 1974, rowing 141 trips down Grand Canyon. While not as good as Off the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon, this book is interesting and pointed toward safety. I disliked some of the tangents and how some stories lacked the organic flavor, but a good text. I definitely enjoyed the lessons toward safety and the analysis. Better maps could help some sections, but nothing you can't remedy (generally)with a park brochure.One nitpick: lawsuits are mentioned about four times in the book, but no conclusion or greater detail is given. Internet searches are largely pointless for these isolated and decades-old lawsuits, so it'd be interesting to hear more about the legal, policy, and other ramifications, rather than some of the random hearsay-style tangents in the book.

OMG! I'm over half way through this thick book and I don't want to put it down! It's amazing how stupid people can be in life and death situations, and just ignore the obvious, and die. Some really are accidents but most of the deaths are from stupidity or carelessness or being drunk! Like floating on your back in the water by the waterfall and just mindlessly floating over the edge and falling hundreds of feet to your death! STUPID!!! I love this book!!!

I really liked this book. I’m always curious about such tragedies, and how they occurred so I could avoid the same fate. The stories are a good reminder to follow the park’s rules and warnings. Easy to read, can skip around the book to the different areas, like falls, drownings, weather, and even murders. Not morbid or disrespectful to the victims either.

I've been a wilderness guide since about 1973. Early in my career, when I was an apprentice climbing instructor, part of the evening fireside ritual was reading from "Accidents in North American Mountaineering" published annually by the American Alpine Club. The chief climbing instructor would read the case, and then we do a group analysis with our students on what went wrong and what we might learn from it. This process was very formative for me and definitely strengthened whatever native caution I had. It may have contributed to a certain timidity that kept me out of trouble, but also discouraged me from becoming particularly accomplished as a mountaineer.This book has many stories that are similarly useful. Like other reviewers, I found it hard to put down once I started, and I read it cover-to-cover over about two days; I suggest clearing your schedule before you crack this book open. There are a lot of ways to die in the mountains, and Yosemite has been a laboratory of sorts for those ill-fated experimenters whose ignorance, poor judgement, and bad luck have terminated their research. There are chilling stories of simple decisions gone terribly wrong, and even more chilling stories of car wrecks and psychopathic murder rampages. As a guide, the tales about misjudgement of the power of water in streams and rivers, and about getting lost, stand out. My colleagues and I put a lot of effort into preventing these mishaps; on long trips in the Spring the stream crossing can definitely be more hazardous than technical ascents on backcountry peaks. But that's not to say that tales of climbing accidents are not also informative, because they are. Some of the stories are legendary, and have been told and retold around many a campfire. Others were new to me. I was a bit surprised at the total count of climbing deaths in Yosemite; I would have estimated about twice as many. And how many is that? Buy the book and see. You won't regret it, and it just may help you stay out of trouble.

This book has been a great read and really does call to attention how to be much safer outdoors, not just at Yosemite. Entertaining read with good detail and nice recap at the end of each section. Really fascinating especially if you've been to Yosemite and hiked many of the trails discussed.

This book was written by a retired National Park Ranger who well documented all the knownfatalities that have occurred over the last 150 years within the Yosemite Park boundaries.The text is divided into chapter categories such as:WaterfallsBase JumpingSnowAircraft DownFalls While HikingDrowningLostMurderHomicide.Each chapter gives what amounts to a study on select events within the category and then providesa full summary of the fatalities within that category at the end of the chapter which includesincidents that were not fully described in the case study.The style of writing is not dry at all andincludes hints of sarcasm or humor where appropriate. For example, one woman was killed while illegallyBASE jumping (parachuting) off of a cliff. The event was advertised and the Park Service knew of it inadvance because the event was a "protest" to demonstrate the "safety" of BASE jumping. The author pointsout the irony that the woman DIED as she attempted to protest the "unnecessary" prohibition against asport she felt was "safe." The text even provides eye witness recollections of the final words peopleuttered as they slipped to their deaths (you can guess a few of those words).Details of the deaths can sometimes be grusome, but there is only one photo in the entire book and that is onthe front cover. (A man who starved to death in the 1930's after being trapped by an early winter storm).The book is actually an excellent source of wilderness education. If you are the type of person who learns fromthe mistakes of others, you will benefit by reading the book. Or, if you are simply unaware that people actuallyget LOST in Yosemite Park and are never heard from again, it is an eye opener. And for those among us who thinkthat a National PARK is safe to behave without concern of one's behavior, the book will explain that theterm PARK is nothing more than a bureaucratic title for what can be a dangerous wild area.I had one friend reject the concept of reading the book as "not being a positive activity." Its people likehim who falsely think that going through life is a matter of "being positive" rather than being well informed.Its people like him who get lost and then can't extract themselves from danger despite being a "positive thinker."I recommend the book for adult or young adult reading and give it a 5 Star rating.
