Many times when a novel portrays every day life circumstances and relationships it reads slow and, unless saved by incredible diction, is a bore. Cherokee America manages to both portray real people living in real times and still COMPEL you to keep turning the page.Verble has meticulously researched this book and it shows. But it never feels like you've suddenly been plunged into a dry lecture about 19th century Cherokee society. She indeed shows and doesn't tell. From beautiful things like how a question is answered with a story from the past to how Tribe is an entity both past and present to ugly things like the life of blacks at the time within the Nation to the limits placed on women (black women more so than Cherokee women). In all ways, it was balanced, nuanced, and empathetic. I enjoyed it greatly!

This wonderful novel is full of fully-detailed characters, suspenseful and exciting plot, and beautiful descriptions. It is a revealing look into a too-often ignored time and place in American history. As her essay on lithub.com (and the novel's afterword) reveals, the story is based on the author's family history -- one can only hope for more from her in the future!

Some books need a bit of patience as the author slowly unfurls the complexity of the story and of the characters on the written page. Cherokee America is one such book that demands the reader follow the lead of the author as she fills in details that a quicker narration might leave unexplored. The main story is that of Check, a strong willed, soon to be widowed mother of five headstrong young boys who faces life with calm resolution and intelligence. But, more than simply the story of one character, the book gives each of the many characters in the book their own voice and their own view on the events as they unfold. The threads of events are carried forward from the point of view of changing protagonists and the cumulative effect is a story of real depth and beauty. This does mean that you need to keep track of everyone and this can be bit of a hurdle as you slowly get to know who's who in this massive tale. The story takes a long time to get moving but, if you can be a patient reader, is it a rewarding one. The first actual crisis doesn't arrive until around page 100 and there were times when I wondered if the book would simply be a poetic tribute to the life of the Cherokee people after the Civil War. However, the events begin to ramp up and, with the plethora of characters, it takes a good fifty pages or so just to keep the different characters straight in your head, so perhaps launching into full swing at page 100 makes sense! By the time the first crisis occurs, you have begun to care deeply for each player even as their flaws and frustrations and, in case of the young men, their shenanigans are exposed. The intertwined familial lines and histories are complex and often difficult to keep track of and I hope that the final book (I read a galley) will have a family tree to help the reader keep things straight! What does come through are the strong connections and loyalties between the families that are passed down in oral histories through the generations. The story is based on real people and it left me wanting to learn more about these histories that so little has been written about. I have not yet read Verble's Pulitzer prize winning book 'Maud's Line' but will definitely be seeking it out after this marvelous book.

The cover art for Cherokee America drew me in before I picked up the book. A lone woman on the prairie, with the wind tumbling through her shawl. It evoked that same sense of loneliness and longing as Andrew Wyeth's painting, Christina's World. I wanted to know this woman's story, and after reading the synopsis was hooked. Cherokee America opens in a late 1800's small town, as Check (Aunt Check to most folks) runs errands at the local general store. This simple setting, the hub center of the town, serves as a surprisingly perfect opening. Not only do we get a solid sense of Check's no-nonsense way of viewing her neighbors and townsfolk, but also her compassion for the downtrodden. I felt like I was there with Check as she rescues a dying infant's life. This is the Cherokee Nation after the Civil War, after the land was ravaged for supplies from the armies, and the people are still attempting to cover the scars, both over the land and within themselves. There are people like Sanders, who walked the Trail of Tears and came out of the War with next to nothing, besides two wives named Nancy. There's Puny, a former slave whose grief turns into a desperate quest for gold and a way to change his circumstances. And Check, who misses her Tennessee home, who is raising her children with a dying husband waiting at home. They keep to the Bible, while not wholly believing in or trusting all it represents. Claiming the whites' religion hasn't saved them from walking the trail to this new land, and it can't save Check's abolitionist husband an early grave. Still, Check keeps her farm running and family together as best she can. Rather than split into chapters, the book is divided by titled scenes, interconnecting the story in a refreshing and fluid way. While usually told from Check's perspective, we also see through the eyes of secondary and even minor characters like Check's sons, Sanders and the two orphaned boys. As the story unfolds, pieces of a larger puzzle come together in an exciting way. The author, a member of the Cherokee Nation herself, uses the Cherokee alphabet and language through the book, which lends another layer of immersion to Verble's story. I loved learning about Cherokee culture, alongside the darker aspects on both sides of the Civil War and all that came after. Big events often have small beginnings. In the case of Cherokee America, a baby's death drives a man to gold, a fever that quickly encompasses the whole town. Check and her family learns they are some of only a few who weren't aware of the Wartime legend. And like it or not, the Singers are quickly embroiled in the inevitable conflict that comes after. Check struck me from the moment I first met her and I've found her character and spirit have lingered with me after. Great heroes aren't always the most obvious, and Check's determination, her love for her family and her people no matter their skin color or creed is what truly saves the day in the end. An expertly crafted picture into the heart of America after the Civil War, Verble's historical drama is sure to capture readers to favor strong characters and compelling plots. Stunning and heartrending in turn, this is a story you won't want to miss.**I was provided with a copy of Cherokee America by the author and this is my voluntary and honest review.**

#541,630 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This booked changed my life, literally. I started a jazz tour in Harlem 21 years ago after discovering a few of the landmarks described in this memoir. Then I opened a jazz club (short-lived), on the street where Mezzrow describes selling under the Tree of Hope in front of Connie's Inn. I give the book out at the jazz singers concerts I produce as door prizes. This is the kind of book where you can point randomly to any sentence in the book and decide to read the whole thing - the language is fresh and metaphors and similes are almost all unique. The story is illuminating about the early assimilation of jazz into the larger society from prohibition era Chicago on; and Mezzrow's focus is on jazz as a catalyst for integration - all told through anecdotes that take you right there.

Vividly reports on the hip music scene of the 1920s and 1930s. Extremely prophetic on many topics including beatnik literature (Kerouac etc), rock n roll, hip hop, counterculture, persisting American racism, and legalized weed (ironically, just becoming illegal as this book takes place). Keith Richards tipped me to this title in his own book "A Life." Mezzrow's title seems to be a model for Richards' book, not to mention his rock n roll life.

Milton "Mezz" Mezzrow is considered a minor player in the in 20th century jazz pantheon by most notable specialty critics. In fact, he's pretty much been relegated to the musical dustheap and likely would have been entirely forgotten.but for one thing: he left an indelible historical mark with, "Really the Blues" (RtB). RtB is a catalogue of his Mezz's obsession with black culture, an infatuation he pursued beyond mere fancy: he enthusiastically and wholeheartedly identified himself as black. His second marriage was to a black woman (an outrage at the time) but his first marriage was to black music: he was incarnated as, "Poppa Jazz". RtB is both an invaluable resource for students of the genre and a poignant story of a life in music.Unfortunately for Mezz, his music has been eclipsed by his contemporaries. These men and women were the giants of jazz. They simultaneously inspired him and they pretty much sent his own efforts into oblivion. As his music has been re-issued, you can judge for yourself if that judgement is deserved.Following a somewhat unusual trajectory, especially given his middle-class, Jewish background, Mezz spent time in a reformatory. He also served time on Riker's Island. He cobbled together a precarious existence and, in so far as he is generally remembered these days, it's as an early, enthusiastic and unapologetic consumer and seller of weed. In fact, his moniker, "Mezz" is inextricably linked to fine cannabis. That's not necessarily bad: it's just not exactly the legacy Mezz would have self-selected. Still, as a tireless promotor of jazz and an inexhaustible catalyst for the formation of various bands, he deserves recognition if for nothing but that effort, even though these transient groupings collapsed after a few gigs. That's paradoxical, as the players were amongst the best in the world.Mezz and his co-author Bernard Wolfe have mostly relied on the then current hip patois of black jazzmen to tell the story. Much of the lingo is now archaic, but (providentially), there is a glossary of terms and the arcana of the musical techniques and styles is explained in the appendix (3 of them) so as to not detract from the narrative . A handy afterword delves further into Mezz's "trans-racial" transmogrification. Wolfe's appearance as a co-author is explained in the final section of the book. In addition to providing literary aid to the project, Wolfe is primarily known as the personal secretary of "The Red Prince", Leon Trotsky a man not known for musical preoccupations. It's hard to discern who wrote what in the book, but that's a good thing: it reads as if it's 100% Mezz pushing the pen.Strangely for a NYRB publication, there are several editing errors (Count Basie appears several times as "Count Basic") and a yen hok isn't used to prepare weed, despite the glossary definition. Another bizarre aspect of the printing is the morphing fonts appearing occasionally in the text. These are minor annoyances that in no way detract from the narrative. In addition to the thorough cataloguing of just about every immortal of the early jazz era (and Mezz knew and played with them all), the ambience created by the book is entirely convincing. Mezz's addiction to hop (opium); the depictions of the comradery amongst prisoners on Riker's Island; the clubs and dives; the apotheosis of black jazzmen are all unaffectedly portrayed.Maybe it's attributable to Mezz's relentless and maybe quixotic pursuit of musical perfection that finally imparts a somewhat melancholy air to the book. "Pure" jazz of the New Orleans variety and its adaptation as the "Chicago Style" were seemingly short lived. Maybe it's the influence of Wolfe's association with the purist and doomed Trotsky that adds this poignant element to the book, but it seems that the flameout was blindingly fast and left Mezz increasingly at odds with popular music. It seems that others could adapt, but Mezz generally was unswerving in this dedication to the pure form.

Published the year I was born this is a great personal history of both this country in post WWII era but also a very interesting saga about a white man's love affair with the Blues. Written in a 'jivin style' akin to the times this is a book to read slowly and savor going back in time to when Bluesstarted going mainstream. Thank you New York Review of Books for reissuing this book. And thank you to the Wall Street Journal for the excellent review that brought this book to my attention.

Often considered a highly unreliable autobiography, 'Really the Blues' is really an insight into the personality of Mezz Mezzrow rather than a factual retelling of his life events. Milton 'Mezz' Mesirow was a Jewish-American jazz clarinetist born in 1899 in Chicago. Mezz quickly showed a penchant for jazz music, like his mentor Louis Armstrong, for whom he briefly may have served as manager.Although Milton "Mezz" Mesirow is generally remembered as one of the best jazz musicians, Mesirow was in-fact a very technically skilled clarinetist and quite knowledgable about the workings of the jazz music industry. Milton's life was often a product of the demands of the music industry which he found himself. His personality could best be viewed as a reflection of the rough-and-tumble environment of mob-controlled, Prohibition-era Chicago. Due to the uncertainty of the circumstances abound, Mezz was a fearless rebel-rouser. He took risks, such as smuggling some twenty joints into a New York night club. He was stopped and caught by the police, a violation for which he was arrested and taken to jail. When he arrived, Mezzrow successfully persuaded the officials to let him stay in a black section of the segregated prison by convincing them that he was African American. In addition to music, race-relations emerges as a theme in the autobiography. Mezz married a black woman, played music like a black person, and was more interested in black culture than in white culture. Mezz also dealt marijuana in spades. His marijuana dealing perhaps earned him higher distinction than his jazz playing. In the lingo of the time, "Mezz" became slang for marijuana. Milton also gained the nickname "Muggles King," at the time "muggles" being a slang word for marijuana. The writing style featured by Mezz and Bernard Wolfe makes 'Really the Blues' a fast-paced and entertaining read. Mezz's narrative style in 'Really the Blues' is self-assuring, reading as if Mezz were in the room and actively trying to engage the reader. Consequently, the insight that the reader gets into Mesirow's psyche comes not just from the stories, but in large part from the narrative style itself. Mesirow is revealed to the reader through his contemporary grammar, liberal syntax, and the nonchalant method by which he organizes his book.Reading 'Really the Blues' is an experience unto itself. Mezz takes the reader on a ride through another time, an era defined largely by the times. The reader is also given an entertaining educational look at the life of an important, if somewhat marginalized early jazz musician, Milton "Mezz" Mesirow.

I only knew pirates, like most people, from the media. The media has changed over the years. We have had Defoe (aka Capt. Charles Johnson),Stevenson, Pyle, Wyeth, Flynn and Johnny Depp attempting to tell a story that long ago got lost in myth and folklore. This book is an excellent way to find the truth, such as it is, about the Golden Age Pirate. I had a blast reading it.I will not spoil any of the facts v wish it was true - you should take voyage yourself. The book is nicely written and flows smoothly. The book is well researched and scholarly, but can be enjoyed by readers at all levels of interest. My one takeaway that I will share is that if there was one rule with the Golden Age Pirates, it was "follow the money" - making a pirate voyage pay.Highly Recommend!!!

Curiosity got the better of me with this book. I wanted to know what kind of pirate myths the author planned to debunk. After all, I’ve been around long enough to have a halfway decent knowledge about pirates.Or so I thought. Benerson Little is a recognized expert on this subject, having published four books, written magazine articles, and appeared on television commenting on piracy. “The Golden Age of Piracy” is extremely well-researched, and contains more information than I expected. There are the stories one might expect, telling us all about Blackbeard or Captains Kidd or Morgan. There are many other captains and pirates he mentions, but more fascinating are the myths he exposes, “facts” I had grown up with and had embraced as true. I won’t spoil a good read by telling them to you, but some of the subjects include:Buried treasureWalking the plankPieces of eight, and what they were worth when making purchasesHow pirates fought, and the weapons they usedThose epic sea battles between two shipsAnd much more!Mr. Little entertains as well as explains, so this is not a dry read. When an answer is not clear, readers are provided with facts as the author attempts to lead us to a logical conclusion (such as the debate over why a pirate flag is called the “Jolly Roger,” as well as some of those other pirate sayings such as “Shiver me timbers!”).Anyone with an interest in history or the golden age of piracy (1655 – 1725) should take the opportunity to read this book. Wonderfully written, generously footnoted, and complete with an extensive bibliography, this book contains a wealth of knowledge and is also a lot of fun to read. Five stars.

Bought digitally. This book was written more like a giant essay. Part I was a little hard to follow without charts, diagrams, or timelines. I was getting confused with the pirates having multiple names. So I took a star off because I was wanted those added charts and images. I also wish I would have known that at the end of Part I that there were a bunch of pictures of pirate flags. Either I missed it mentioned in the text or it was never mentions. So I took another star off since it wasn't made obvious until the end of Part I. Part II was much easier to follow. Overall the book was easy to read for a common person, even though it was a little hard to follow in Part I.

Although I'm still plowing through Part I and at least one other reviewer has said Part II is better, I'm giving this book 2 stars based on what I've slogged through so far. As another reviewer has noted, it reads more like an essay. Yes, an essay assigned on writing a thousand words on what pirate flags may or may not have looked like with the simple conclusion that nobody knows for sure. ...or on what pirates wore which could have been this, that or whatever described in great detail but concluding that nobody knows for sure. This pedantic discourse drags on ad nauseum. If you're interested in interminable discourse on minute details about what pirates and their flags may, or may not, have looked like, by all means snap this book up now! If, like me, you're looking for a pleasurable read about the golden age of pirates, who they were and what they did, look elsewhere!

I learned a lot about pirates and piracy from reading this book and am glad I read it, but it really needed a good editor. The author is redundant in many places, adds unnecessary qualifications ALL the time. An editor could also have helped with the narrative flow that is all over the place.

Whatever you thought you lnew about pirates, Benerson Little will set you straight. His passion for the subject shows as he compares the characters we read about in novels or seen in the theater with the real people they portrayed. Though you may still enjoy your Pirates of the Caribbean movies you will find yourself shaking your head and smiling as the old salt cries "Arrr, shiver me timbers!..."

The author is thorough (sometimes getting a bit lost in detail), and writes well. He's obviously obsessed with pirates, and takes great care to point out what they were really like and contrast it with the popular image. For the popular image, he draws on sources ranging from Hollywood (lots of that) and Howard Pyle, to romanticized, exaggerated accounts that were contemporary with the pirates themselves, and reminiscent of the dime novels that glorified personalities in the American West.Worth reading, if you have any interest in pirates at all.

The book started with interesting ideas and was engrossing. Then stories blended together. Interesting characters were only touched on. By the end the book became exhausting. Needed an editor in the middle sections.
