From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–An exceptionally handsome book on eggs, from the delicate ova of the green lacewing to the rosy roe of the Atlantic salmon to the mammoth bulk of an ostrich egg. Aston's simple, readable text celebrates their marvelous diversity, commenting on size, shape, coloration, and where they might be found. The author occasionally attributes sensibilities to eggs (An egg is clever, for example). Still, her quiet descriptions of egg engineering and embryo development (no mention of mating) are on the mark, and are beautifully supported by Long's splendid watercolor depictions of a wide variety of eggs. (One teeny carp–Steller's jays are not spelled with an ar, though they are stellar performers when wheedling for your lunch at a campsite!) A beautiful guide to the unexpected panoply of the egg.–Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. This beautifully illustrated introduction to eggs resembles pages drawn from a naturalist's diary. The text, scrolled out in elegant brown ink, works on two levels. Larger print makes simple observations that, read together, sound almost like poetry: "An egg is quiet. . . . An egg is colorful. An egg is shapely." On each spread, words in smaller print match up with illustrations to offer more facts about bird and fish eggs across the animal spectrum. The illustrations are too detailed for read-alouds, but there's a great deal here to engage children up close. The succinct text will draw young fact hounds, particularly fans of Steve Jenkins' Biggest, Strongest, Fastest (1995) and his similar titles. Long's illustrations are elegant and simple, and the gallery of eggs, as brilliantly colored and polished as gems, will inspire kids to marvel at animals' variety and beauty. A spread showing X-ray views of young embryos growing into animal young makes this a good choice for reinforcing concepts about life cycles. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. So much in so few words. Such a gentle, beautiful way to introduce children to all the eggs in the natural world and to the idea that they too started as an egg.We volunteers at the zoo were looking for a themed presentation to encourage children to explore the world of the egg. We thought and thought and came up short, mainly because we were focusing only on bird eggs. This book does just that by taking the "egg" concept as a diversity of life example. For the older children, we can use real eggs; for the young ones, we can use the book and its lovely illustrations.

One of our favorites! The text is descriptive and there’s lots to be learned inside it’s oages. The illustrations are beautiful and we often read it and then make art afterwards. Perfect for lots of ages, my 3 year old loves it and I learned something new as an adult. Highly recommend this!

This book is among a series by Dianna Hutts Aston. Amazingly illustrated by Sylvia Long. My children adore these books; as each book in the series takes them carefully through a part of nature (rocks, seeds, eggs) and its natural cycle. The book cover pages alone are worth a long look, with carefully illustrated seeds/rocks/eggs. Enjoyable education at its best. Beautifully done, these books make excellent thoughtful gifts.

I love this stunning book. Every child should be exposed to the gorgeous artwork. Read as much of the text as the child can understand or just peruse the colorful illustrations.

All of Dianna Hutts Aston's books in this series are wonderful. They are beautifully illustrated, well-written, and engaging, while being educational at the same time. I teach 6th grade but I use many of them to introduce science concepts.

Such a cute, beautifully illustrated book. My daughter (2nd grade) loves this book.

This award winning author has such an eye for the intricate, subtle and almost microcosmic detail of the subjects and topics she portrays. Her books for children are both informative and gorgeously put together and will delight readers of all ages. Sybil Blazej, Librarian, artist, children's book author and a dog walker

My 5 year old son loves this book. The illustrations are amazing and even look beautiful on the ipad screen. On each page there is a short sentence about an egg. In smaller text, there are more detailed descriptions about each aspect of an egg. So, one has the option of reading the single sentences or the more detailed descriptions for an interested child.

Review

"This beguiling, thought-provoking, sumptuously illustrated, and engaging book is essential reading." --Current World Archaeology"'On the Ocean' is a magnificent book, being carefully crafted and requiring all of Barry Cunliffe's encyclopaedic knowledge. The image portrayed, through multilateral means, offers a coherent narrative that can be followed through different times and spaces, offering both the overall view and the detailed developments. Stefan Vasilache, Journal of Ancient History and Archaeology No. 4.4"On the Ocean is a book all nautical (and terrestrial) archaeologists should read... It provides a comprehensive overview from a seafaring perspective of the Mediterranean and Atlantic from the beginnings of humankind's voyaging in these waters to the discovery of the Americas." -- Colin Martin (University of St Andrews), The International Journal of Nautical Archaeology"This is a stunning work, handsome and massive, its author a distinguished and prolific archaeologist. The maps offer a 'sea-wise view of the world,' and their unconventional projections bring readers more deeply into the narrative, which is enhanced by numerous color photographs....[T]hose with a serious interest in the subject will find this splendid, challenging book immensely rewarding....Essential."--J. C. Perry, CHOICE"The book adopts a familiar format to Cunliffe's other recent volumes and supplies everything we have come to expect. It is hugely ambitious in scope, fluently written and beautifully illustrated with panoramic photographs of landscapes and monuments, plus trademark mapping... In betwe en, the narrative takes in deep geological history, the nature of winds, tides and currents, the night sky, the peopling of islands and coastal areas and details of ship- and boat-building technology." -- Robert Witcher, Antiquity Reviews, December 2017"An absorbing and lively account of the early Atlantic and Mediterranean. Importantly, it reflects the latest research and delves deeply into the motives of those who sailed them: not just where and how they travelled, but what fears these seas evoked."--History Today"A grand and beautifully illustrated work, offering a fascinating perspective from which to understand human development and achievement."--Michael Scott, BBC History Magazine"[T]he total effect of On the Ocean is to encourage a new way of looking at European history using a maritime perspective. I hope it changes the way people think: it is good enough to do so."--Felipe Fernández-Armesto, Literary Review"This is a stunning work, handsome and massive, its author a distinguished and prolific archaeologist... Those with a serious interest in the subject will find this splendid, challenging book immensely rewarding."--CHOICE Reviews

This is a great history by Cunliffe. The history of sailing and navigating the European coasts and north Africa as well. All the way up to the 1500s is covered. Fascinating material. The Greeks and Celts as well as Romans are covered. Buy and read today.

Cunliffe's descriptions always are presented with defined premises and probable results that are corroborated with current archaeological, genetic and linguistic artifacts and debates. While the book's title may not be original it is certainly the best summation of maritime discoveries compared with Pythias' limited descriptions from the 4th century BC. I look forward to Sir Barry's next research.

Barry Cunliffe did it again. The research that went into this book gives terrific insight into early boat construction and some of the hardship early merchant-sailors endured.

This is an extremely interesting book for those who want to read factual books.

Be warned! I have just received this, and I'm sure it is as good a text as any of Sir Barry's books. However it is printed in the smallest font of any commercially available book I've ever owned. I dare say the publishers did this so they wouldn't have to release the book in two volumes, but they've done the reader no service!
