Kindergarten-Grade 2–An exceptionally handsome book on eggs, from the delicate ova of the green lacewing to the rosy roe of the Atlantic salmon to the mammoth bulk of an ostrich egg. Aston's simple, readable text celebrates their marvelous diversity, commenting on size, shape, coloration, and where they might be found. The author occasionally attributes sensibilities to eggs (An egg is clever, for example). Still, her quiet descriptions of egg engineering and embryo development (no mention of mating) are on the mark, and are beautifully supported by Long's splendid watercolor depictions of a wide variety of eggs. Larger print makes simple observations that, read together, sound almost like poetry: "An egg is quiet. . . . An egg is colorful. An egg is shapely." On each spread, words in smaller print match up with illustrations to offer more facts about bird and fish eggs across the animal spectrum. The illustrations are too detailed for read-alouds, but there's a great deal here to engage children up close. The succinct text will draw young fact hounds, particularly fans of Steve Jenkins' Biggest, Strongest, Fastest (1995) and his similar titles. Long's illustrations are elegant and simple, and the gallery of eggs, as brilliantly colored and polished as gems, will inspire kids to marvel at animals' variety and beauty. So much in so few words. Such a gentle, beautiful way to introduce children to all the eggs in the natural world and to the idea that they too started as an egg.We volunteers at the zoo were looking for a themed presentation to encourage children to explore the world of the egg. We thought and thought and came up short, mainly because we were focusing only on bird eggs. This book does just that by taking the "egg" concept as a diversity of life example. For the older children, we can use real eggs; for the young ones, we can use the book and its lovely illustrations.
One of our favorites! The text is descriptive and there’s lots to be learned inside it’s oages. The illustrations are beautiful and we often read it and then make art afterwards. Perfect for lots of ages, my 3 year old loves it and I learned something new as an adult. Highly recommend this!
This book is among a series by Dianna Hutts Aston. Amazingly illustrated by Sylvia Long. My children adore these books; as each book in the series takes them carefully through a part of nature (rocks, seeds, eggs) and its natural cycle. The book cover pages alone are worth a long look, with carefully illustrated seeds/rocks/eggs. Enjoyable education at its best. Beautifully done, these books make excellent thoughtful gifts.
I love this stunning book. Every child should be exposed to the gorgeous artwork. Read as much of the text as the child can understand or just peruse the colorful illustrations.
All of Dianna Hutts Aston's books in this series are wonderful. They are beautifully illustrated, well-written, and engaging, while being educational at the same time. I teach 6th grade but I use many of them to introduce science concepts.

My 5 year old son loves this book. The illustrations are amazing and even look beautiful on the ipad screen. On each page there is a short sentence about an egg. In smaller text, there are more detailed descriptions about each aspect of an egg. So, one has the option of reading the single sentences or the more detailed descriptions for an interested child.
