I purchased both this book, as well as the practice test book. Get both. This book includes one practice test, but the more the better (there are 2 in the other book, titled "PSB Health Occupations Exam Practice Questions"). The practice tests help you understand how questions are formatted and also give you an explanation with each answer, such as how a math problem was done, or a short paragraph explaining the science stuff. It's impossible to truly study all of the science areas, but at least going over them briefly allowed me to know a little bit about each one so I could take better guesses on the exam. I studied these 2 books for about 2-3 weeks and I scored in the upper 90's on almost every section of the test!
I’m reviewing this book based on my experience taking the PSB test in June 2018. I recommend also buying the practice tests book from Momentrix, as having both books gives you 4 different practice tests to take as preparation for the PSB.I found the book helpful overall in preparing myself for the PSB test. I’m about 30 years out from high school biology & chemistry so the science section acted as a good refresher.To me, the most helpful aspect of the book was the practice tests. I timed myself for each section (based on the time allowed) & this helped me to prepare mentally. When I first saw the # of questions versus the time allowed, I thought I could not answer all questions in that time. After taking both practice tests, I was confident I could take the test & have time to spare.Another aspect of the practice tests that helped me were they helped me focus my studying. I failed the science section of the 1st practice test & this showed me I needed to seriously study the science section in the book. I did great on the language sections so I didn’t spend any time studying them.Finally, the practice tests are much harder than the actual PSB (from my experience with the test) so they were helpful to me as they forced me to over-prepare. This allowed me to be more successful than I would have been.3 weaknesses I found: (1) the book does not give you the time allowed for each section of the test, (2) the science section emphasizes more subjects than are on the actual test (such as environment, geology, & so on), (3) poor editing – when checking my answers to the practice test I found the key had the wrong letter assigned but the correct answer. (Luckily, I caught this & wasn’t led to study the wrong answer.)Test Times: Academic Aptitude 75q 40 min, Spelling 45q 15m, Reading Comp 35q 35m, Nat. Science 60q 25m, Vocational Adjustment Index 90q 15min
This was semi helpful, it helped me prepare for the exam... but my best advice is to do the test as quickly as possible and when you have 2 mins or so left on each section, remember to finish answering them all. Don't leave anything blank!
I had two weeks to study by the time I was notified of the testing date. Every day I read different parts of this book, and watched the videos it gave me. I have always been awful in science so I really thought I wouldn't pass. I found that doing the science questions and then reviewing the answers helped me more than reading the review section. I also got a practice book and did the same with that and it must've worked because I passed! And if I didn't have this book I probably wouldn't have. I found the test to be easier than the practice questions, although it's not the same format, each section is timed, you have 30 minutes to answer 90 questions, so you have to strategize so you can answer most of them. Would definitely reccomend this book.
Just took the test yesterday. I took the plain PSB HOAE, not the version for nurses (which I think has the same name) which would have been much harder. This book helped me focus and develop a clear study strategy. It was not complete enough to use as your only source though. The spelling on the actual test was much harder and included maybe 30% medical terms that I did not recognize. The math in the book was ok, but I needed way more practice and info on percents, ratios, and some probability. The form relationship section was also very weak and the practice test way too easy, but there are not many other resources available out there that use the same format for this non-verbal type test that the PSB HOAE will use. Overall, it was well worth it to have a little extra help studying and taking a practice test. Wish there were several practice tests.
I feel I could have found a more accurate review online. I don't feel the practice questions were similar to the real PSB questions. Almost all of the spelling and natrual science questions in the real test were medical themed, where as the book just gives you random words and natural science questions. The math questions were word problems rather than just written out equations. Additionally, there was a general aptitude section of the test that this book doesn't cover.Absolute waste of my money.
The sample questions are nothing like the real test questions. Downloaded this to help prepare for a test I knew nothing about. I spent 2 hours everyday for two weeks studying and taking the practice tests. I felt prepared until I actually took the test. This is nothing like the test at all, the questions are not even remotely on the same level as the test. I really just felt like this just gave me false confidence. Not sure how I did on the exam at this point, but I can say this didn't help.
I haven't taken the test yet but there are helpful tips in this book, summaries of content and a practice test. It would be helpful to have a book with multiple practice tests. I know this book was just added to the suggested study list at my community college. Mometrix also offers additional video help with the book, Good luck!
