I think this book has very good recommendations and help you decide which things are better for your body. I'm not a vegan and I will not become one. The hunger scale is a very useful tool you can use on a daily basis. You have the "junk margin" which are meat and dairy, they just tell you the majority should be vegetables in your plate. Then it describes sugar as it really is, an addictive substance that, if you eat, you are going to crave. What I liked the most is his theory of why we eat, now I identify when I stress, anxiety or bored eating and stop before. I think this book will help me to reduce my food intake, which is another recommendation, watch out for your intake and everything will fall in place. Last but not least I do exercise 5 times per week and I always thought it should help me to lose weight, but in the book exercise is just a recreational activity.

I read Allen Carr's stop-smoking book, mostly out of curiosity (haven't had a puff in 10 years and don't miss it) and found it very smart -- a combination of cognitive-behavioral practices, neuro-linguistic programming, and excellent information about the nature of addiction. I hoped to find a similar standard in the losing-weight book, but it's not quite there, although I found it very good in its own terms. The reviewer who noted that it was slanted toward a vegan-style life is correct, although Mr. Carr was careful to note that we could eat meat and dairy too, just not too much. Michael Pollan's injunction to "eat food, not too much, mostly plants" says mostly the whole thing, in fewer words.Parts of this book I found useful were mostly reminders: be mindful, eat only when you're hungry, sugar is an addictive substance (and not metaphorically, but actually), and surprisingly the European method of food-combining (that Suzanne Somers adapted for the US a bunch of years ago) was reaffirmed. Not terribly helpful was the rehashing of why we shouldn't eat processed or junk food, but I assume the main text of the book was written well before his death in 2006.In both books, what I found helpful and also original was his emphasis on brainwashing, both external and internal. As I read both books, I recognized the kind of brainwashing he was talking about and appreciated his drawing my attention to it. It is much more subtle and locked in deep than just commercials and advertising. I also liked his differentiation between having a habit and being addicted -- he does not pull any punches there, especially in the smoking book. Other things of note: The discomforts we feel when we stop doing what we were doing are actually mild, when one pays close attention, but they are caused by withdrawal from the substance we were addicted to and enhanced by groundless fear that was brainwashed into us. Sugar, for example, nicotine of course, but it also brought to mind quitting coffee and those awful headaches. An acquaintance recently went dairy-free all at once and described weeks of unexpected torture. Another thing I'm not altogether clear about is his Big Monster -Little Monster distinction, but I will be reading it again & hope to have a clearer understanding. In summary, for those who have never heard of Allen Carr (like me a week ago), these books are worth serious attention. They are motivational in general, and some of the detail is little-known and very interesting. I find the no-smoking book more powerful, perhaps because Mr. Carr described himself as a 60-100 cigarette per day smoker for several decades and his painful personal experiences as such make that book crystal-clear and arresting. The losing-weight book is not that passionately felt, and it shows in the difference of neuro-linguistic programming in both books. Smoking -- the NLP pulls out all the stops; the number of times the words "smoking" or "cigarettes" are linked to words like "filthy" or "disgusting" gets the message across very vividly. But food is different from cigarettes, and I gather that Mr. Carr didn't have a weight problem, so the NLP isn't all that strong and maybe shouldn't be. But both books strongly recommended.

I enjoyed this book because it outlines simple steps to take in order to permanently change your eating habits for good. Thinking differently and keeping an open mind are crucial for making any sort of permanent change. I'm putting these changes to work and I'll update my progress.

Practical and reasonable solution to a real problem. I love the way he gives you a different perspective. I would recommend this book to anyone truly struggling with over eating.

I am going to do this. It makes a lot of sense. I am still a little scared, but think it might be a reaction to the last sugar I've eaten. I am reminding myself that it will be easy and that I am nót depriving myself of anything.

I have never read a book on any subject where I was left feeling more empowered. Easy, simple and life changing! Thank you for finally making sense of it all for me. 56 years old and looking forward to my future life of healthier living at my ideal weight. What a burden you've lifted from my life. Thank you. I guess I should thank actor James Spader and Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show because he mentions how he quit smoking reading your book during his interview and even though I don't smoke he made mention of wanting to try your weight loss book as well. Ten minutes later I was reading Allen Carr The Easy Way for Women to Lose Weight on my kindle. I read it all in two days in fact I couldn't stop reading it! I was amazed! Thank you and thank you James Spader... Never thought I'd ever say that! Ha ha!

I cannot believe that following the logic of this book, eating slower and stop eating when no longer hungry has made me start losing weight! As someone that is a somewhat healthy eater (paleo diet) I did not expect to see a benefit. I have been dropping 3 pounds a week for 4 weeks so far, with about 20 lbs to go. Nothing has worked for me before. I am not dieting, I am not hungry because I eat when I am hungry. Amazing!!

This was a very enlightening and informative book. I didn't agree with everything, but I read the entire book with an open mind. After dieting all my life, it really helped me to understand a lot about food addiction, craving and food as health. Very, very helpful!
