Margot's journey was definitely heartbreaking in some spots especially her initial dealings with a father that she barely remembers who hasn't spoken with her going on thirty years. That relationship was the crux of the story, overshadowing the sweet romance.Sweet Tea and Sympathy is about family. More specifically it's about fathers and daughters. As we see Margot and her father's relationship somewhat mirrored by the relationship between Margot's love interest Kyle, a widower, and his two young daughters. The latter's relationship is indicative of what could have been between Margot and her father had her mother not taken her away. At first it sounds really harsh, the idea of Margot's father not trying to reach out to her in all those years, and you somewhat see her mother in a not-so-pleasant light as well, you know, taking a child away from her father and not trying to bridge that gap between them. But as the story progresses it's clear that some perceptions are only surface deep, and sometimes you have to dig in order to discover the truth of the matter.The McCready family is wonderful. Full of colorful characters each with their own unique quirks. None of them give Margot grief for possibly not wanting to stay in Lake Sackett if another job opportunity comes along, but they all welcome her with open arms even with the potential leaving hanging in the air. It's through their embracing, that she learns what families are truly all about.There's a prequel novella Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck, that focuses on Margot's cousin Marianne. It takes place more than five years before Sweet Tea. Having read the novella previously, I was thrown by things that transpired off page, and the fact that so much time had passed between, but if you haven't read the novella there should be no problems getting into this full-length story. It would just enhance your reading.I can't wait to see which McCready family member will get their story told next. And since they are a pretty close group, I look forward to checking in with the rest of the clan and seeing what trouble they can cause next!

This was a charming book. I loved the story and the characters the author creates in a back roads southern town. This book centers around Margot a women who experiences so bad luck with her current job... Because of this luck she gets offered another job by a family member in Georgia.. When she travels from Chicago to Georgia, Margot gets such a shock... You will love watching her reconnect with her crazy family. I laughed and giggled my way through this book... You will fall in love with Lake Sakett's resident principle. His closed ways towards Margot was frustrating at time, but the obvious chemistry and budding romance was fun to be a part of.This book was everything I would want in a great contemporary romance. Girl down on her luck, girl gets help from unexpected source, girl discovers family and friends that she will grow to love, girl grows through this experience, and girl falls in love. This is definitely a book I will recommend to others. This one is a #MustRead for me!

I enjoyed this book well enough though I kept feeling as if the author was trying to decide if it was a romance or about family dynamics. Both lose out and feel "light" -- I needed more of one or the other to make this book satisfying.On the family dynamics side: they were interesting but needed more depth and by the time we got to the father-daughter reconciliation it wasn't really believable or emotionally satisfying. And when it came to the crucial decision of whether to stay in Georgia or go, I certainly didn't feel the "weight" of her final decision. I could have lived with her deciding either way, the stakes didn't seem high enough. On the romance side: it had potential but I really didn't like that the heroine made all the running. Also, while there were flashes where you could see a relationship developing, there wasn't enough interaction between H/h to make the romance have an emotional impact on the reader.The best thing about this book was the humor: the dialogue was tight and snappy and very entertaining. I wanted more of that! So much so that I will try the second book in the series. The fact that this is the first in a series has me hoping that this was just the set-up to get us introduced to the town and to the main characters -- maybe the next one will be less one dimensional.

Sweet Tea and Sympathy by Molly HarperSouthern comfort in the form of family support. Big city girl learns to love rural southern hospitality and the unwavering loyalty of her extended family. Meeting a man that appears to have tragedy in his eyes but that can kiss with abandon is a huge endorsement for staying.Small town, southern contemporary romance with a few quirky characters make this romance a delightful read.I liked the dialog interaction between Margot and Kyle. A little sarcastic, a little playful. Neither is afraid to be forthright while their relationship grows. Margot’s lack of knowledge in dealing with children lead to a few funny quips.I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to gift.

I enjoy Harper's books. They are well written full of humor and so entertaining. In this book the main character has a life changing event and has to start new. She goes from a trendy city lifestyle to something like Green Acres. For anyone unfamiliar with Green Acres it was a 1960's or 70's tv show where the city folks moved to a very rural setting. That totally dates me. Anyway, it was a good read.

Once again Milly Harper has brought two wonderfully flawed and funny characters to life. I could not put this book down and will be consuming the rest of this series quickly.

I'm a recently retired professor of human anatomy & physiology, and I wish I had had this text before retiring. I enjoyed reading this book as what is now only recreation for me rather than material for my courses, continuing to learn about the details and perspectives of the developmental and evolutionary changes leading to the adult human head that, frankly, I confess that I didn't know while teaching A&P for almost 40 years, and that's why I wish I had this book years ago in order to enhance the information that I otherwise could have offered my students. Oh, well. While I can't use it anymore for teaching, I highly recommend this book to current A&P faculty.And as an afterthought, although I cannot speak as an anthropologist, I would imagine that those in that field, both faculty and grad students, would also immensely appreciate the contents of this work.

The Evolution of the Human Head begins with Daniel E. Lieberman highlighting the movie nonlogic of Planet of the Apes that shows apes functioning in a human manner with ape heads, which I appreciated. Lieberman demonstrates the complexity and evolvability of the head as a structure and emphasizes that the various components interact with and affect each other in development throughout the book. The book covers bone structuring, organs, senses, diet, teeth, and the characteristics of living and fossil primates. Page 40 notes the importance of the gene Runx-2 (also known as Cbfa 1) that regulates osteoblast differentiation in intramembranous bones so that elevated levels of expression cause increased rates of bone production, and the gene's absence leads to a lack of bone formation; page 40 also notes the importance of the Sox9 transcription factor for the differentiation and proliferation of chondrocytes for endochondral bones. The differences in skull development from neonate to adult for the chimpanzee and the modern human are shown in Figure 4.3 on page 105, in Figure 4.7 on page 116, and in Figure 4.9 on page 125, showing the projecting effect of depository growth fields in the chimp's jaws and the nonprojecting effect of resorptive growth fields in the human's upper jaws and face and in the upper lower jaw. On page 215, Lieberman notes his interesting experiment of juvenile mini-pigs running on a treadmill everyday an hour a day for three months had thicker leg bones (which he expected) and thicker cranial vaults (which he did not expect) as a way of explaining the thinning of modern human skulls over the last few thousand years since the origins of agriculture by theorizing that exercise triggers a systemic growth response; my personal experience in running supports the experiment's results as I've concluded that the entire skeletal structure is strengthened from the strong impacts, noticing that even the neck bone feels significantly stronger from regular running. Page 248 notes the limiting effect of the derived, inactivated version of the MYH16 gene that causes smaller weaker muscles in modern humans. On page 350, Figure 9.5 shows the different positions of the foramen magnum for (a) Homo sapiens, (b) Australopithecus africanus, (c) Sahelanthropus tchadensis, and (d) Pan troglodytes. On page 555, Figure 13.7 contrasts a recent gracile modern-human skull (left, a male from Italy) with an older robust Pleistocene skull (right, Zhoukoudian, Upper Cave 101), showing the thicker, larger construction of the Pleistocene skull. On page 565, Figure 13.11 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo erectus cranium (KNM-ER 3733) into a Homo heidelbergensis skull (average of Kabwe and Petralona) with arrows showing the required upward and downward directions of growth. On page 572, Figure 13.14 features a thin-plate spline transformation of a Homo heidelbergensis cranium (average of Kabwe and Petralona) into a Homo neanderthalensis skull (Monte Circeo) with arrows showing the required horizontal directions of growth. Reader beware. While I greatly enjoyed Dr. Lieberman's book-- The Story of the Human Body: Evolution, Health and Disease--this volume is for a far more technical audience. Let me give you a sample:"The prosencephalic signaling center produces signaling factor (Shh and Fgf8) that induce neural crest cells surrounding the forebrain to differentiate into mesenchymal cells that make up the upper third of the face above the stomodeum..."If that all makes sense to you, then you are probably the right audience. But if not, think twice before investing.
