About the Author
Marc Cushman is a WGA screenwriter, a TV and film director/producer, and author. I've read Marc Cushman's books on the making of Star Trek TOS and really enjoyed them. All his books are brimming with facts, figures & behind the scenes stories. My only real quibbles with the LOST IN SPACE books are minor:(1) I wish they included color photos and/or photos on glossy paper. I realize that it would've made the book more expensive, but I imagine in 2017, the audience this book is aimed at is truly diehard fans of the show & would've gladly paid the extra $$!(2) I'm guessing the publisher's rush to get to press is the reason for the NUMEROUS typos. Some of the more glaring ones include calling the set on Stage 15 both the "von Trapp villa" & the "Von Trump Villa" (page 205). Well-known LA talent agent Rita Vennari is listed as "Rith Vennari" (page 226), "The Space Trader" episode is referred to as "The Space Pirate" (p.566) and Marta Kristen's Season One hairstyle change is attributed to the wrong episode. All three volumes are peppered with these--it's distracting at the very least, and confusing at most.A great companion to Marc's book is Bill Mumy & Angela Cartwright's Lost (and Found) in Space which DOES have color photos (but none on glossy paper).Again, these are ALL great books documenting a TV series fans have been dying to know more about for many years. As an aside, L.B. Abbott, the special effects wizard who worked on Irwin Allen's films & TV shows (his interviews are in Cushman's books) wrote a wonderful book about the projects he worked on titled, Special Effects: Wire Tape and Rubber Band Style and it has a multitude of glossy color and B&W stills. It's out-of-print, but a nice addition to this grouping! :)
If you grew up watching Lost in Space, either the original run (which means you're old, not that I'm pointing fingers) or the many times the series ran in syndication, this book is a warm, comforting companion to the show. Lots of details of the behind the scenes stuff, from shooting issues, to guest star backstory, to how various monsters and special effects were created.Disclaimer: I'm personally acquainted with the author. But I *loved* the show growing up. In many ways, the Robinsons were the family I wished I had. John was a stalwart, brave, and always kind father figure; Maureen was lovely, healthy, and unrattled by the alien or unexpected.I am using the book and the show as an exercise routine - I read the chapter about the episode, then watch it, while pedaling on my stationary bike. It's a win-win.Also, Mark Goddard as Major Don West, my first childhood crush. Yum!
As with all of the other books by Marc Cushman this one does not disappoint. It is extremely thorough. Some might find it too thorough. But I enjoy the depth that he delves into the details. He will give you so much background on Irwin Allen you will think you got an extra biography book free. But it serves to let you get to know the man and his motivations leading up to this series. From there it's a wealth of information about the creation and production of Lost In Space. It was yet another book by this author that I literally couldn't stop reading. I would have been depressed when I got the the eventual end if I didn't realize that there are two more volumes covering seasons 2 and 3. You will certainly get more than your moneys worth while enjoying this read!
While I haven't finished it yet, volume one concentrates on the early career of Irwin Allen. While this is great background information pointing to how he came to produce Lost in Space, it could have been done easily in a quarter of the pages. You have to hang on for a while to get to the meat of the book.The author is somewhat non-objective in certain areas, but he's obviously a fan of the show. While the first part of this book was slow, I'm looking forward to the rest of it and volumes 2 and 3
It's too bad that your average textbook which is used by those college professors who teach film courses don't rely on this one that's devoted to the classic series Lost in Space. It's not only interesting reading material but it provides a lot of information on how network executives and advertising sponsors have been able to influence popular culture.
An Exhaustive look at the details of bringing the Pilot and First Season of the classic show to life. Behind the Scenes detail is amazing. Only small hesitation from 5 stars, in this day of the Web..I had already seen most of the photos in the book via Facebook groups devoted to the show, Otherwise a fascinating and good read.
No matter what we think of Lost in Space, what they had to do to get it made the first year was not easy at all. When they say two many cooks in the kitchen will spoil the pot, is just what they had to go through to get it made. To think what this show might have been if they would have left the writers alone and just do great stories and let the back story grow on its own.
The book is well researched and written. It's too bad the shabby printing of photos was not addressed.
